• I should start off by saying that we are rookies at this so please speak in English!!
We have SMF (Simlpe Machine forum) (http://www.simplemachines.org) set up on a test website and we just leased vB for one year as a test.
We need to pick a forum that work for us and if our plans work out we will be using (maybe) 200 to 300 forums.
SMF 1.0.1 Is free and no costs involved just to keep a link and other small things on our page. I have many questions but these are the ones that come to mind. The easier the better right now until we learn what we are doing.

How easy is it to transfer SMF to vB?

How flexible is vB to adjust to our needs?

Can we use our adds on the same page (header, footer ,right left) or does the forum page have to stay the same?

When uploading SMF all you need to do is upload it and your done. How easy is vB to upload and how much work do you have to do before uploading.

How hard is it to update with new downloads? I read that you need to delete folder first before uploading.

With that many forums(we hope) we will need others to monitor, how easy is it to give access to them with out giving full access?

Out of all the forums we've looked at it's come down to SMF and vB. We try to have one of us look at the good while the other picks it apart. I/we thank you in advance.

Still early here I'm still on my first cup of Joe.

  • If your launching 300 sites, I assume this is a commercial venture? If so, I would recommend vbulletin because they are - bar none - a leader in the market and as the old saying goes "no one ever gets fired for buying IBM". lol

Support has been fantastic in the 4 years I've been running a forum and if you check out www.big-boards.com you will see the largest of them are running vbulletin or custom coded solutions.

  • Demo's are suppose to last 24hrs. Try again. If it doesn't work, just sign up for another one.

I can't honestly answer what are the negative aspects about SMF. I'm not familar with the software therefore any information I give you will probably be biased.

In my opinion though, I recommend getting the vBulletin Owned License. This allows you to have the license for life. So in the future, let's say (hypothetically) your site collapses, or you decide to close it, you can move your license from one site to another and wouldn't need to buy another license to cover that site.

  • Hi There:

Sorry it took someone to get to you. Jelsoft staff are usually good about answering questions like yours.

Anyhow, I'll give it a shot (even though I'm not staff).

for SMF, there is an importer available. You can see the status of the SMF (1.0) (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=728082&postcount=21) importer.

vBulletin itself is very flexible. I suggest you give the vBulletin Demo a shot if you haven't already and fiddle around with stuff. (http://www.vbulletin.com/admindemo)

Ads can be added anywhere you desire. It is the matter of messing around with the templates.

For vBulletin, you need to make sure you have PHP and MySQL installed, preferrably the latest versions (PHP 4.3.10 and MySQL 4.1)

After that you configure config.php and tell it your MySQL information (username, password, database, server) and from there save and upload.

As for new downloads, it depends on your server configuration. If you have SAFE MODE enabled, you will need to make a stop point and have files temporarily stored there. I don't know anything about a folder deletion.

You can control which groups access what forums through a comprehensive set of Usergroup permissions. Check out the admindemo and tinker with it a bit.

    Hopefully that helps! :)

Best of luck on you purchase

  • I guess my questions are to hard for some of you. I see replies to other post made after me.
Not a very good start for vB!!
I'm waiting for a reply before we upload vB. Can someone direct me to a place to get answer?

    1. ImpEx can convert SMF to VB easily
    2. vB is one of the most flexible forum software I have ever seen and I've tried many.
    3. You can adjust any of the templates to your liking so ads can go wherever you like.
    4. Just upload, edit the config.php and run the install. Easy as that.
    5. Just upload and overwrite the forum directory and run the upgrade. If you have hacks installed, some like Beyond Compare or Alexis Merge can help you adjust your source files before you upload them.
    6. You can setup moderators to have control over a single forum or forum of your choice. You can also setup Super Moderators that can moderate every forum.

  • Download? for Import

  • Yes it is and I think we have made up our minds vB is it!! We are starting small and working our way up. I just wish someone could help us with the other things we ask.
Adding to FORUMHOME or a home page
    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129717

    Thanks for vB

  • Thanks to both!!!
I went to the demo and tried somethings and had to log out and do family things. When I tried to log back in I could not. It told me you have to reg. to try the demo.(not worded like that)
I think it's going to be upload it and see.
Can anyone tell me the bad things to look for in SMF. To tell you the truth I have the same question in with SMF about vB. With something as big as what we are doing we need to look at everything!!!
Like I said we have a lease opinion with vB now to test it and we plan on spending money to make sure we have what we want. When we pick one of the two forums we have to stick to that one and not think of transferring to another!
Please tell me what you think so we pick the right one.
