Atheism is ONLY a lack of belief in god
PERIOD
no religion
no churches
no worshiping
no religious anything
Does an atheist worship something? No. Does an atheist pray to something? No. Do atheists gather together in set groups for the purpose of being taught about how to be good atheists? No. There's no dogma, no ritual, no rules to learn, no leaders, no dieties, no belief system to speak of. Not a religion.
If my atheism with respect to your deity is a religion, then your atheism with respect to other deities is also a religion.
A-theism is a complete rejection of any fallacious arguments used to support such postulates and assumptions.
It has been my experience that all theistic religions make claims consistent with the above statement thus I will say that atheism is not a religion unless the atheist in question makes a claim about a theistic being.
It has also been my experience that most atheist are rational and therefor will admit that it is possible that god may exist, but that it is more reasonable to conclude that god is improbable or that if god does exist that one can not speculate as to his possible qualities and properties nor his will and desire with regards to humanity.
Based on my personal experience in dealing with arguments from either side I believe that it would be an error to classify a-theism as a religion.
But it would depend completely on how one defines the term religion.
If we use non-standard definitions of theism then it may be possible to argue that a-theism is a type of religion.
For instance there is an area of the brain asscioated with belief in a "higher power other than self" Termed the presence center of the brain.
Where religious persons differ from atheists is that a believers brain becomes active to stimuli directed at this area of the brain while an atheists brain does not become active.
If religion is defined as simply having the prescence center area of the brain then yes atheism is a religion.
If it is defined as brain activity resulting from stimulations of this area then no, atheism is not a religion.
Most non-theistic religions would be better classified as a philosophy instead of as being a religion.
But again it depends entirely upon the definition of the term religion.
I see people who claim they think it is a religion but they are not atheists and not mental giants.
The religion was made for people who believes in "god"(or "gods"...).And i don't believe in "god",so,i don't have a religion...
Okay...?
however i will try
religion is a belief in god
atheism is an absence of proof in god
hence atheism is not a religion
One similarity does not constitute a religion.
I have a religion. I am an atheist. I know the difference.
Atheism is a position on a subject. (Subject: Gods. Stance: Not bloody likely.) A religion is a set of beliefs and rituals which are desigened to promote a view of the world and self.
If atheism is a religion, then health is a disease.
for every person who is religious who has never read the entire bible, there is a person who is atheist who never reads anything

If I consult my dictionary, it's confusing whether atheism is a religion or isn't. The first definition (the service and worship of God or the supernatural) rules out atheism, but it could be argued that atheism fits the second definition (a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs and practices). Just to clarify, "religious" is defined as "relating to or manifesting faithful devotion to an acknowledged ultimate reality or deity." I would have to say that atheists are definitely religious, whether they consider their worldview a religion or not.
