It is the "lingua franca" (most commonly used lanugage) of Australia.
It serves as a medium of communication wherein people of diverse backgrounds who speak different langages can communicate, language barriers are broken by learning one language that can be understood by all.
Because it removes language barriers, English can serve as a unifying factor in a multicultural and multilingual society such as Australia by fostering dialogue which reduces miscommunication.
English is the most international of all languages and making English official gives Australia an edge in the globalizing world.
