• Before I discovered R&S like 2 weeks ago, I never thought about religion. It was furthest from my mind. I don't know how I stumbled onto this place, but now, after reading what Christians write, I am 100% determined to do what I can to get the truth out there and silence them.

I know alot of you are casual about it and will say "they're entitled to their beliefs". I disagree. They are seriously messing up our society and there's no limit to what can happen if we just sit around and not take action. I can't believe what I read when I'm in here and I don't want the brainwashing to spread to my kids and poison their minds. It's sickening the way these people think and act. They're trying hard to bring back The Dark Ages.

Fellow atheists, if you say I'm overreacting, you're being naive. I'll just politely ask you guys to keep on these guys until they wise up and stop their nonsense, or until they shut up altogether.

    Ignorance is dangerous.

  • Only online and in small social groups.

  • Militant as in become violent? Never!

I believe everyone is entitled to religious freedom. Public discourse is the way to change minds and moral behavior is the way to change hearts.

  • Good thing you haven't discovered the L/G/B/TG section.
    Or have you?
    Because you are flaming here.

  • I now carry a water pistol.

  • I'm with you... and Rod B.

Religion is the great divider of mankind.

    http://www.atheists.org/

    Welcome to my world!
You are not overreacting. In the dark shadows of R&S, the Believers remove their daylight disguises and slither on their bellies, spewing forth their true selves.

  • Yeah, now I put on my combat boots before entering YA...

  • lol Does flaming count? I used to use the word tolerate. Not any more. Beliefs, begins and ends with bs.

  • You sound like Hitler.

Are you suggesting genocide of Christians? Or perhaps at the least revoking freedom of speech? Would you make Christians 2nd class citizens?

  • No such thing as a casual atheist --that's like being "sort of a believer"

You either are or you're not-no middle of the road in either case

  • "HOUSTON !! This guy has an identity problem."
    "Abort him" !!

  • I think its unhealthy that you're getting this involved in an internet forum, if what people are saying is making you angry then you should back away from it for a few days, cause it will have only a negative impact on yourself. You'll end up frustrated and fed up, believe me, you'll prove nothing simply because nobody is willing to listen, they have their beliefs and you have yours, as long as they're not harming you then leave them be.

Not to mention the waste of time that this will cause you.

And dont be so dogmatic, you give decent, polite, non-bigotted atheists a bad name :)

  • At first I was just annoyed, then I began to notice how much of it was just a camouflage for bigotry, homophobia and racism, and I began to understand that Michael Schermer's sort of bemused search for detente with fundies was naive. The need to stop the headlong retreat to the bronze age is immediate.

  • This is one of the few places where I can reveal my true beliefs without being persecuted by Christians. In my community my family and I would be ostracized if I spoke openly about my true beliefs.

  • in the dark ages christians had their way, no questions, and i think theyre having a difficult time dealing with the transition of smart people taking over. its based on ignorance. YOU ARE NOT OVERREACTING!!!!!

  • Yes, I used to think that christians were more or less good people having only met church of England ones, but after seeing the militant right wing of christianity, I am disgusted to the core, I will do everything in my power not to be under the dictatorship of those freaks.

  • I'm neither casual or militant. I'm sure I'll never change a believers mind. Nor will they change mine.

  • hate-crime much?

  • "Militant Atheist"???

    There is no such thing.

    (Bwah,Hah,Hah,Hah!!!)

  • Some comments from christians make you wonder just how ignorant some people can be...but rather than get all worked up just have fun with it

but yes it is scary that in this day and age people can still follow blind faith

  • True faith is unshakable by reason. Our efforts are futile against fundamentalism. We may only hope to slow the growth of religion. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic- I don't know. I'm all for what you're doing, but it seems that there's only a dead end to be had for it.

That said, we should use the courts to full advantage in our fight against irrationality.

  • Atheist terrorists, that's a new one!

  • One fights ignorance with enlightenment and wisdom, not violence. What you advocate is also reminiscent of the Dark Ages and is no better than any religious extremist's ignorance. Take a cue from successful leaders of this world like Gandhi, MLK, Nelson Mandela, and see that non violence and knowledge are much more powerful than attacking and fueling hatred and anger.

Is that you're real name? Were you in the Air Force? I hope you're not who I think you are.

  • Only on R&S. I don't go out looking for a fight. This just seems like an appropriate venue for one.
I think with a little research you will find that the religious population is already on a steady decline. Just let it take its course.

  • Yes I agree, your ignorance is very dangerous. Whether you choose to have faith in our Lord and Saviour or not is no skin off my teeth, but you will spend eternity in the lake of fire. However, should God's grace reach down and touch your heart, I would expect that you will be here on R&S telling all of His great love.

  • Only Jesus can deliver a man from the illusion of atheism...

    ...former atheist

  • Yes....this is fun.

  • It has not caused me to change in the slightest actually.

It has confirmed my belief that both sides of the debate have some very well educated folks and some that I would be willing to pay to either go to the other side or stay there.

It is not my place to force belief (or lack of) on anyone. I do have the right to keep people from pushing the beliefs on myself and on my family though.

Push your beliefs on others and you are no better then they are.

  • I went from a benign atheist to an obnoxious one.

  • I'm not a "casual" atheist whatever that means, I'm just an atheist. What I have learned since being on here and reading Dawkins' book is that the militant atheists do have a point. I understand where they are coming from and I tend to agree that religion is responsible for a lot of harm to society.

  • Yeah, me. I have gotten to the point that my jaw sets every time I hear the word Christian or Jesus, or even god.
I used to only hate preachers, and their inane babble, now I find the entire religion to be the bane of mankind.
